Terry Schuster, President of the Oregon Public Library District, presented plans for a proposed new facility to be located on one acre next to the Post Office on Washington Street.  Building a new facility is necessary because the old facility can not accomodate its 38,000 item collection.

Ross Christensen, an OHS senior, shared his travel experiences to Japan as a People to People ambassador last July.  Since 1956, People to People has been promoting world peace and cultural understanding through meaningful personal interaction.

Carol Erickson, from the Ogle County Health Department, spoke about the preparation the U.S. Census Bureau has begun to insure a complete and accurate count. April 1,2010 will be census day.

Oregon Kiwanis members Steve Pemberton, Verva Thomas and Donna Heynssens sort children's books donated by the community.   1.300 books were collected for distribution to Oregon Headstart,Jefferson Elementary School,Best Beginnings Learning Center, Chana Library, and Angel Treasures.

Commander Rich Day of V.F.W. Post # 8739, explained some of the activites of the Post, highlighting the trip last year that 3 of its World War II veterans took to see their war memorial on the Wahsington Mall.  They were sponsored by Honor Flight Chicago, which aspires to bring our veterans to Washington to visit memorials America has erected to honor them and remember them.  For more information go to www.honorflightchicago.org.

Sterling Kiwanian Dick Cox explained Kids Against Hunger to the Oregon Kiwanis Club.  For the past 20 years Kids Against Hunger has been striving to feed the hungry around the world starting with Haiti.  For more information on how to help go to www.kidsagainsthunger.org.

A troupe of the 2009 Oregon High School Madrigals made an appearance the morning of their first semester final exams for the Oregon Kiwanis.  Under the direction of Mitch Lauer students are now in preparation for contest recitals in February.

Meggon McKinley (right), Ogle County Administrator, highlights for interested Oregon Kiwanis members the major internal changes of the old courthouse building.  She explained special efforts to preserve the likenss of period stenciling and the memorial roll of local Civil War soldiers.  Completion is expected around the first of May.

Treasurer Tom Shouer presents a new service project. The Oregon Kiwanis Club will establish collection boxes to collect reading books for young children. The club will sort and distribute these books.

Home of Hope Executive Director Kathleen Hughes shared with the Oregon Kiwanis free services available through the Cancer Wellness Center for Lee, Whiteside and Ogle Counties.  For 6 years Home of Hope has been offering psycho-social services ,  including educational programs, wellness programs, support groups, and individual and family counseling.  Call 288-4673 or 881-8063 for more information.

At a recent Oregon Kiwanis meeting, Andy Egyed, Supterintendent of Oregon Parks, explained improvement plans for Oregon Park West.  Improvements would include amphitheater seating, baseball/soccer plazas, a skate park and a spray park among other recommendations.  The Oregon Park District is pursuing grant opportunities to assist in financial planning.  For more information, go to www.oregonpark.org
